How to read casino bonus terms
Wagering, game weighting, expiry and the fine print that changes an offer's real value.

A welcome banner showing “100% up to £100” tells you the headline, not the full story. Before accepting any UK casino promotion, four areas deserve a careful read: wagering requirements, game contribution, time limits, and maximum bet rules while a bonus is active.
Wagering requirements
Wagering (or play-through) is the number of times you must stake bonus funds — and sometimes your deposit too — before withdrawing winnings. A 35x requirement on a £50 bonus means £1,750 in qualifying bets. Lower multiples are not automatically fairer: a 20x rule applied to deposit plus bonus on a £50 deposit and £50 bonus means £2,000 in play-through.
Check whether wagering applies to the bonus alone or to the combined bonus-and-deposit total. That single line in the terms can double the effective requirement.
Game contribution weighting
Slots usually count 100% toward wagering. Live casino, roulette, blackjack and video poker often contribute 10–20% or are excluded entirely. If you plan to play table games with a bonus active, open the contribution table first — otherwise your bets may not reduce the wagering balance at all.
Free spin rules
Free spins are typically locked to named titles. Winnings from those spins become bonus funds with their own wagering multiple, which may differ from the deposit-match rule. Spin counts, per-spin value (often £0.10), and expiry (commonly 24–72 hours) all appear in the promotion terms, not the homepage banner.
Expiry and max bet
Most bonuses expire within 7–30 days if wagering is incomplete. While a bonus is active, operators often cap individual bets at £5 (or 10% of the bonus, whichever is lower). Exceeding that cap can void the bonus and any associated winnings — a rule that catches players who raise stakes mid-session without checking.
Cashback vs matched deposits
Cashback offers return a percentage of net losses over a period. They feel less aggressive than deposit matches but may still carry wagering on the cashback amount. Matched deposits front-load value but demand more immediate play-through. Neither is inherently better — it depends on how you play and whether you will realistically complete the requirements within the expiry window.
Before you opt in
- Read the full promotion terms, not just the marketing page
- Calculate total play-through using deposit + bonus if both apply
- Check game weighting for the titles you actually plan to play
- Note the expiry date and set a reminder if needed
- Confirm max bet limits and stick to them while wagering
Declining a bonus and playing with your own deposited cash is always an option. Many players prefer the simpler withdrawal path that comes with no active promotion.
